A sample of karuizawa 27 multi cask vintage, which I won in a twitter contest. Lightly smokey on the nose, suggesting smoked glazed ham studded with cloves. Palate is soft coal smoke fading into leather armchairs, tobacco and dried red fruits. Wow.

@Jonhelmkamp I don't recall exactly what I paid for it (I bought it off of a friend with another bottle) but WhiskyMarketplace shows that it ain't cheap - but yes it's worth it!

Enjoying a hearty dram of Ardbeg 10 yr while watching "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo"...I ran outta Cragganmore 12 yr some time ago so I'm going with the "Nordic" looking bottle/box of the Ardbeg.

I was given a sample pack of Balvenie for Christmas that includes 1 50ml each of Doublewood 12, Single Barrel 15 and the Portwood 21 year old. Since I have never had a Balvenie, my goal this evening was to have a very small sample of each. The Doublewood 12 is nice but I was more interested in the Single Barrel and Portwood but quickly ran into problems with the screw caps on these little bottles. The cap will not screw back on the Single Barrel 15 and the top won't come off the Portwood 21. So I'm finishing the Balvenie Single Barrel 15 and finding I'm really enjoying it.

@maltygirl: I've had caps that were immovable. Get a small sharp knife and holding the bot. upright and, most importantly, cutting away from your self, break the bars that join the cap to the ferrule - One at a time, turning the neck of the bot. 'til they are all done and it will simply unscrew; if you find one that is a bit tough to separate, put your left thumb on the back of the knife for added purchase. Take your time! Dont cut yourself! Save the minatures for your own samples!
Good Luck!

@A'bunadhman Thanks for the tip, I was looking forward to keeping them for my own samples but on one, the lid won't screw back on. I'm looking forward to trying the Portwood 21.

Sortilege (a 30% ABV Canadian Rye / Maple whisky liqueur - not sure what the proportion of maple syrup to whisky is...) followed by Centennial 10yr Canadian Rye Whisky...the Sortilege was interesting - I was doing some baking with it, and I mixed with egg nog over the holidays, but I hadn't tried it straight.
I found it sweet, much like drinking maple syrup with an underpinning of rye whisky...my wife on the other hand, who doesn't drink, tasted a tiny bit and said it tasted to her like whisky with a tiny bit of maple syrup flavouring. I rated it at 80/100 as it wasn't as sickly sweet as some other liqueurs I've tried (or, as @talexander calls them 'Frankenwhiskies'), and it was actually sort of satisfying...I can see pouring it over ice cream or oatmeal or pancakes...

CanadianNinja, Black Bottle 10-year is a lovely and soft Islay blend, which is one of my favorites. It is a good introduction to the Islay character for newbies. I hope you enjoy yours.

Revisiting my bottle of Machir Bay. Was hoping it might get better with time in the bottle, but I'm having a tough time coming around to this whisky. Struggling with the sharp rubbery notes.

@maltygirl: If the cap screwed off, it should go back on! What can happen, if you have had to mucle the cap off, is the ferrule comes up onto the threads on an angle and the cap will not screw all the way back - You should be able to push it back down so it is loose on the neck: Use a poly handle (any one of your kitchen utensils will do but definately NOT a knife) Hold the bot. upright an use a firm pressure using both thumbs on the poly handle; this usually works. Failing this, cut it off. It serves no purpose once the cap has been removed
Cheers.
