Boy, this is only my tenth Tamnavulin. Not really a distillery that appears on my radar often. That has everything to do with the fact that the standard range does not really inspire me. Obviously, the lion’s share disappears into the blends from Whyte & Mackay, Crawfords and Mackinlay’s, to name a few. I wonder if this independent bottling of a quarter century old single cask can inspire.
Well, it doesn’t do much for me on the nose, to be honest. A lot of wood, not so much fruit. Fresh sawed planks and wood shavings as if standing in the workshop of a cabinet maker. With a bit of imagination I also get apples and pineapples, but its work. Nougat, maybe? Hmm. Tough.
The body is fine. Creamy and feisty, but the taste is again all about wood. A big bitterness and lots of spices, but barely any fruit. Apples, pears… the spices simply become too loud, so the fruit cannot show itself. This is almost astringent. Pity.
The finish is medium long, bitter and spicy.
It was actually quite cheap at 80 EUR, but still not bang for your buck, I’d say. I prefer to spend that money elsewhere.
