I picked up my annual bottle of Remy Martin VSOP Cognac.
It was on sale and Fall is approaching. A friend made me a Brady warmer. It holds the Brandy glass at an angle with a small sterno flame under the bell of the glass. You rotate the glass under the flame for about 15 seconds after that you keep it warm in your hands.
I can't believe how much better the Cognac or Brandy is after being warned in this contraption. It's amazing Even cheaper Brandy tastes better warmed.

@Benancio
I think the Ashok manoeuvre (original or otherwise) would probably work the same way. Sounds interesting.

@Nozinan Lets see if this link work. Of course the glass would have 1-1/2 oz of Cognac in it.

Watch out handling that canister when warming your third and beyond...

@Alexsweden I agree! I think my friend invited the thing. This would never be a commercial item, too much liability. I used it a couple times last year, I need a smaller sterno can. You rotate the base of the Brandy glass, I only heat it for 10 seconds, then remove the flame and snuff it out with its lid.
I'm not sure I'd put any spirit in the glass above 50%ABV, if it were to spill it could ignite. I did ignite the fumes once by removing the glass while the flame was still in place. It wasn't too terribly exciting, very small flame that put itself out.
I've read that some warm their Cognac in the microwave for 5 seconds, I'm not sure how safe that is either and I'm not recommending or discouraging its practice, but be very mindful if you plan to heat your spirits.
I agree I wouldn't try this after having had 3 or more. After having Cognac warned, it's the only way I drink it now! Be safe, don't try this at home, I'm a professional, haha.

Placed an order for my allocation of the Ardbeg Supernova 2015 Comittee Release bottling - released here in Australia at 11:00am Australian Eastern Daylight Savings Time.
Rather stoked that I managed to get my foot in the door. :D

@paddockjudge [FR has discontinued their relationship with the Diageo. Four Roses Bourbon in a Bulleit bottle will eventually come to end.] I was under the assumption that MGP was providing Bulleit the juice for it's bourbon. Or is MGP only providing the rye spirit for Bulleit's Rye 95 ?
10 years ago 0
@cherylnifer, I believe you are correct on both the bourbon and rye. Four Roses distillate is currently aging in barrels and will be bottled for a few more years by Diageo. Now that FR has turned off the tap, Diageo is laying down MGP juice. The rye most certainly does taste like MGP Rye.

@cherylnifer, yes the Bulleit bourbon has for years been from Four Roses, the Bulleit Rye from MGPI. The bourbon source will change in the intermediate future.

Ardbeg Supernova 2015 Committee Release. Just noticed 6 bottles total of it online in my county this morning, called quickly, and was allowed to buy one of them. It is home now. I doubt I'll open it anytime soon, unless @Nock completely craps out on getting some on his own. My money is that within 10 days @Nock will have found and bought 3 bottles of it.

If my annual raise is decent next month, I'll be doing a little shopping spree. In my sights:
•The new Kilkerran WIP Bourbon Cask, Cask Strength because I've been looking forward to this bottle existing since WIP #1 came out
•Laphroaig QC because the price is right at $49
•Laphroaig 18 because of the 48% and because it might be our last chance once it's fully discontinued
•Longrow Red Shiraz because this whole range intrigues me
•Springbank 12 CS because it's great and worth rebuying
I'm also considering some non-whisky: maybe a higher-strength armagnac, maybe a Chartreuse Green. Any whisky-loving opinions out there on this stuff?

@Victor . . . if only!!! I am currently striking out everywhere I try. Dang Virginia and their antiquated liquor laws!!! I have one hope left . . . that seems to die every day. I put in an order to an online shop that is supposed to ship to my sister's house in Illinois. However, nothing is shipping. And every day that goes by I am wondering if they are out of product . . . leaving me SOL.
There is always the chance that my "honey hole" store in Tennessee will get some. They had bottles of the SN2014 last Christmas. But they don't ship or hold bottles. So if I don't get this package shipped I will have to hope that the current price of about $180 will keep the bottles on the shelves long enough for me to pounce.

Ardbeg Uigeadail 2015 bottle. I picked up a 2014 bottle a few months ago. I'll get a bottle or two every year, if I find a good deal. For me it's a better deal than Ardbeg 10y. Are the new batches as good as some of my earlier bottles, maybe, maybe not. I like most of the Uigeadail I have had.
I'll grab a Cory too if I find them at a good price.

@Benancio It's sad you can get an Uigeadail or Corry cheaper in the states than you can get a 10 in Ontario...

@Nozinan I feel your pain. Prices across the world aren't fair, several threads on this.
Out of the Ardbeg line I think the Uigeadail is a solid value.

Also a private bottling of Amrut and a distillery sample.

@sengjc please let us know how that tastes.... 5 years for an Amrut is OLD, and virgin oak!

@Nozinan
Fortunately they had a bottle of this on tasting at the store.
As I recall, straight from the bottle in at cask strength, sweet vanilla nose. The sweetness and vanilla caries forward, toffee, mustiness, oak and a surprising but delightful salty-savoury complexity not unlike a malt with serious coastal influence - add a dash of clove(?). Oily character. Finishes long becoming drying and savoury. A surprisingly smooth mouthfeel considering the high alcohol.
Much the same with some water and some rest time just more fruity and the salty tang is more pronounced - a rye bourbon and Talisker mix minus the peat.
The label is a little misleading. It was not fully matured in virgin oak. It had 3 years in bourbon oak before another 2 years in virgin oak.

I'm looking to expand my collection with a double order.
I'm thinking uigeadail and aberlour 18. The uigeadail because I finished my bottle last weekend and feel the need to re-stock. I also recently had the aberlour 16 and really liked it so I figure two more years in wood won't harm it. Price is good!

Just picked up a bottle of Glenfiddich 14 year Bourbon Barrel Reserve. I'm debating getting into that or Booker's 2015-1 tonight. I'm very curious to see how "bourbony" the 14 year is being aged in new oak barrels
10 years ago 0
@Alexsweden It's too bad you're not in Toronto. I have a bottle of Aberlour 18 I would be happy to trade away.

@sorren: So, did you open your bottle of Auchentoshan 21? How was it?
I just bought a bottle of Macallan 18 yr and a bottle of Macallan 12yr Gran Reserva and will be getting two bottles of Macallan 12yr (old version, darker sherry) either tonight or tmr night. I have in my sights a bottle of Chieftain's 1993 20yr (sherry), a bottle of Glendronach 1992 20yr (PX), a bottle of Auchentoshan 21, a bottle of SMWS 7.55, and a bottle of SMWS 116.18. The next bottle I open up after I finish my Glengoyne 21yr will be the Macallan 12yr (old version). My collection is definitely growing ...
