I have an exciting Macallan 13yo. @ proof which I would love to open but as the temperature here in Aust. moves into the 30's I will probably put off drinking it 'til next winter. What to open next then? Something simple, perhaps an Aberlour 10...It is always good, excellent value and vaguely suggestive of its' big brother, the mighty A'bunadh.

Got my hands on a bottle of Arberg Uigeadail lot number L8 083 23 05 4ML , Delivered to me by my dear sister from a trip in Phoenix. Question is do I open it or save it? I'm thinking I'll have to open in the near future. I feel like a kid on Christmas morning.

A long overdue dinner with friends (originally intended for my birthday in September) presented a very nice surprise from them:

A gift bag including some beer (one bottle each of Ola Dubh 'Highland Park 12 cask', Innis & Gunn Rum Cask finish, and Amsterdam Nut Brown Ale...all very nice indeed) also included a very nice extra surprise in the form of a 180 mL bottle of Nikka Yoichi 10 yo. My first Japanese whiskey, and one that has been on my radar for awhile. All four bottles will be opened and greatly enjoyed, in due course.

Just got these three today but it will be a few days before I get to sample them: Auchentoshan Valinch, Kilchoman 100% Islay, and Balvenie Signature 12 Batch 4

Probably will go for a Lagavulin 16 next. I've seen this described often as a love it or hate it scotch, but considering my affection for Caol Ila it seems like a good bet. Talisker 10, which I enjoyed out a few weeks back, is another option.

@misslauren I believe the love/hate aspect to Lagavulin 16 is based on your level of love/hate for smokiness in a whisky. If you like smoke...you will love it!! If you go for no or subtle smoke, I would try to find a bar or a store with a sample (or a 200 mL mini-bottle that are available in many LCBO stores in Ontario, should you fancy a cross border trip to the Toronto area from Buffalo). Here's the current LCBO inventory listing:

Just bought the Port Charlotte PC9 today.

I wasn't planning on buying any whisky but when I'm in the city I usually visit 1 or 2 of the vine and spirit shops to see if they have anything interesting on the shelves.

When I saw they had this 1 single bottle I just had to buy it so it could join my PC7 and PC8 at home. I discovered the PC series to late to get the PC5 or PC6 unfortunately.

Hmm...I have a gift cert to use so I'm humming and hawing. Might go for a glenfarclas 15/17 or 105 and a Springbank 12/15.

Of course I'm easily distracted and subject to any whim when I enter the liquor store...

Found a Glenfiddich cask strength 15 yr old Distillery Edition marked down to $30. Just enjoyed the last dram of the normal Solera 15, so it'll be fun to see what this one is like. If I can keep a secret, I'd love to wait until early Feb and give this as a birthday gift to my husband who loves the original Glenfiddich Solera 15.

@evarees, I prefer the Distillery Edition to the regular 15, EXCEPT, that the DE has like, no finish. It just disappears.

I've got my eye on a bottle of Four Roses 2011 Limited Edition Single Barrel to purchase. Just curious as to how different or better this may be compared to the standard single barrel, besides the higher ABV.

@Victor
Victor replied

@Wolfsong, there is no standard Four Roses Single Barrel. They have 10 different yeast and mashbill combinations (five yeasts, and two mashbills), and then the individual barrels are unique. These are sold at 50% ABV/ 100 proof.

The 2011 Limited Editon Single Barrel is at Barrel Strength/Barrel Proof, somewhere between 107 proof and 118 proof in this case.

My sister has a bottle of the 2011 LE. I like it quite a lot, and I can't say that for all of my other tastes of other Four Roses Single Barrels. It is a bottle I would be happy to own myself.

@Victor Thanks for the good info! Forgive my poor choice of wording...my use of the word "standard" just meant to imply I was talking about the Four Roses Single Barrel bottles at 50% ABV versus the ones designated as "Limited Editions". With the different yeast / mashbill combos, I'm under the impression that means bottles from different barrels could differ greatly from one to the next?

The reason I ask is because I have a friend who has a Four Roses Single Barrel that tastes quite a bit different from mine. His has much more spice, cinnamon, just the very slightest hint of pepper on the palate. Mine, on the other hand, is dominated by lots of banana and cocoa powder, with the slightest hint of dried cherry on the finish. His has much more "bite", whereas mine is so smooth I can't actually believe its 50% ABV. Both are very good, but quite different.

I'm looking to buy Mackmyras Special 07. It's in swedish called "Framtidstro" wich can be translated to "Belief In The Future".

I think thats the perfect name for the first (whisky)purchase of the new year.

@Wolfsong, yes, the Four Roses Single Barrels do vary quite a lot. I certainly don't like all of them. Frankly, I would want to taste the specific formula (they have that funky alphabetic code at Four Roses) I was considering buying before making a purchase. For me Four Roses is very much hit and miss. Some of their products I like a lot, like the 2011 Lim. Ed. SB and the Four Roses 2009 Mariage.

I just got 3 bottles from local guys here in Washington state! DryFly Whiskey is Killer good for only being aged 3 years! and I have had their bourbon in the past too and its amazing. I also got Woodenville's white dog whiskey (aka moonshine) very different, but full of flavor! There is another I tried from Fremont Distillery named Mischief and it was very peppery but still had a well rounded flavor!
