@ajjarrett, although you're totally right about that price, no Redbreast is a "stock-up whiskey" for me at any price.

I understand. I guess it depends on how a person would define on "stock up" in this case. I wouldn't mind have at least three to four bottles of the 12yo CS and 15yo in stock. However, I would spend that much effort in Redbreast as much as I have with stocking up on the 16yo Nadurra. HA! I have 10 bottles (I might have to go check), in storage at my house, and a friend of mine has 9 more for me, that I need to pick up by taking a trip to West Yellowstone. Too many, well, not if you have the money and enjoy the dram.

Wait, you don't like that Nadurra 16, do you?

@ajjarrett ANd how many of those are the legendary 0814D batch? I'm very envious of you. I've only tasted Nadurra once or twice but it's a solid whisky. I found 2 0814D bottles in a mom and pop shop 2 years ago. One is making its home with me. The other escaped to the north. I may have to open a bottle sometime soon.

What's the basis for this "legendary" status of the 0814D batch? The review on All Things Whisky? I see that @Alexsweden reviewed it here on Connosr and gave it a non-legendary 86.

@ajjarrett, I'd consider you the expert on Nadurra 16. Which are the legendary batches in your opinion?

@MadSingleMalt I've had a bottle of the 0814D batch and was immediately encouraged to go out and grab 2 more which are currently bunkered. If it isn't the best batch it's an awfully damn good one. But I will concede that @ajjarrett is probably the resident expert on Nadurra 16.

@Nozinan My friend in West Yellowstone is holding 9 bottles of the 0814D Batch for me. I am sure there are always good reasons to open a bottle. Just opening a bottle is a good reason.

I should also mention, so not to be too greedy, the location I got these from. Totalwine store in Bellevue, WA, located just east of Seattle. The Seattle, Northgate Totalwine store doesn't have the 16yo Nadurra.

I must admit, I am not sure if I would label the 16yo Nadurra 0816D ''legendary," but if it is an accurate label I am glad to have a few bottles of it then. The reason why I say this is, I haven't opened a bottle of the 0816D, yet. Once I do, I will try to remember to comment on it. As for legendary batches, I am quite bias. I think almost all batches are legendary, now that it is discontinued. I mentioned, some time ago, that I have a bottle of the 0606A, which I will assume is truly 'legendary' but I won't know until I open it. HA.

@BlueNote I will try to open one soon, but I need to finish the current bottle I have open. Or not. haha.

I might as well take this opportunity to mention that the next bottle I plan on buying is the 21yo Redbreast. And since my budget is a bit limited, I am going in on it with my cousin. I might also pick up a bottle of the 15yo and 18yo Glengoyne, but not in the near future.

Nadurra 16 YO Batch 11/11 is (was) amazing. I didn't expect to meet its equal, then came along 7/12, again amazing. I would be willing to test 8/14 and establish a benchmark...strictly in the name of research.

@ajjarrett, I think we need to talk. wink

Actually, the batch I am enjoying now is the 0712U. And after chattering about this, I might just have to open a different bottle to compare. However, I do have a bottle of the Knappogue Castle 14yo, which I got a few days ago, that I need to open. I love these difficult decisions to make.

@MadSingleMalt that's a good score for a good, albeit, Non-legendary whisky. It oxidized quite badly when it was less than 25% full if I recall correctly.

@Alexsweden, thanks for the heads up on the opened Nadurra 8/14 fill level. A good bottle seldom lasts long enough to worry about air exposure, but these days with the open bottle count in my reference library climbing, I try to eliminate the duds quickly. The current bottle of 7/12, opened in August 2017, and sitting around 25% fill level, has held up very well....I had some this week.

I've got a bit of a conundrum. A positive one. I've won my workplace hockey pool. The prize money is about $110-$120. Seeing as this is "found money", I'm obviously going to spend it on whisky. But what. I've got a few options in mind. Perhaps my Connosr friends can give me some advice. Here are the options I've considered thus far:

  • Lagavulin 12 ($160) I don't normally spend this much on a single bottle of whisky, but it would only really be $40-$50 of my own money. And this was a fantastic whisky. The downside is that I hadn't planned on buying whisky this week, so it would be an unplanned expense. Not a significant one, but priniples are important. This seems to be the most irresponsible option.
  • Two bottles of Wiser's Dissertation ($130): This is a limited run and I really like this whisky.
  • Talisker Distillers Edition ($120): I love Talisker. I loved Talisker 57 North. I'm going to bet that I'd love this one.
  • Lagavulin 16 ($125): I know it gets mixed reviews around here, but I've never hit a bad bottle and it's a perennial favourite.
  • Port Charlotte Scottish Barley Heavily Peated ($110): I've been curious about this one, it's 50% ABV and Bruichladdich has those bottle codes which allow you to get all the info you want. Downside: NAS unpredictability.
  • Lagavulin 8 ($99): It's Lagavulin, it's bottled at 48% ABV and I've never tried it.
  • Kilchoman Machir Bay ($97): I've never tried it, it seems to get good reviews, it's Islay. Potential downside: NAS unpredictability.
  • Laphroaig Quarter Cask ($85): I've had it. I know I like it a lot. I would have money left over.

@OdysseusUnbound From your list and sticking closer to the “found money” amount, I’d grab the Talisker DE, (the Lag 12 if overspending).

Bottles I’d Suggest that weren’t on your list: Tyrconnell 16, Glen Garioch 1995, Glen Garioch Renaissance II & HP Full Volume.

Have fun picking!

@OdysseusUnbound laga 12. I’ve had most of the others, and I hear the laga 12 exceeds them all. The 12 would likely give you pause given the price if you didn’t have hockey pool goodness to supplement. Use it as a convienent excuse to buy a whisky you know is spectacular. Find a friend going to the us for the weekend and have them pick up the 16 for $55 usd at duty free. It’ll always be accessible that way. Be just a wee bit irresponsible!!!

Ps. Can you tell I’m living vicariously?

@nooch I know I’d love the Lag 12 as @Nozinan provided me with a sample of the 2015 Edition and it was the best scotch I’ve had (with Laphroaig 10 CS being a very close 2nd).

@Mancub The ones I listed are available at the closest LCBO on my ride home from work. My time is incredibly limited, so shopping around isn’t really an option.

@OdysseusUnbound No need to shop around, call the store you pass on the way home from work and have them order in exactly what you want if they don't already have it. I have very limited access to a vehicle, and like you, have little time or opportunity to shop around, so I have my local store order in the bottles that I want (I've probably ordered in 12 bottles). Being a rare or special opportunity to splurge on a bottle, you should get exactly what you want, no?

I also just noticed that my local store has WhistlePig 10 Year Old Straight Rye 100 Proof at $153. Pricey, but only $33-$43 of “my” money. The plot thickens.

@OdysseusUnbound - Congrats! Free whisky is a sign the Gods smile down upon thee! laughing

Going off your preferences on here I'd say go Laga 12 or the PC HP - it's technically not NAS, I guess, as you can see the ages and all of the barrels that go into it when you look up the batch recipe.

@OdysseusUnbound only the Talisker included “love”. Have it, its a favourite. Also know the PC. Its nice but i found it thin and a bit hot. If i wanted the peatiness of PC I’d reach for a Ledaig.
