Just picked up a batch 28 Aberlour A'bunadh and an Ardbeg Corryvreckan last week. Looking forward to opening the A'bunadh next.

Just got myself a bottle of Springbank 12yo Claret Finish. Hard to find, but the shop I bought it from had 3 bottles at a good price. Next one to open is my Fettercairn Fior.

I would like some input from you all.

I have literally no idea when the Corryvreckan and Alligator will arrive in stores (damn governmental agencies) so I was thinking of buying something else for now.

I've been waiting longer and longer between my purchases to get more funds and buy a bit older bottles.

Right now I was thinking of buying one of those three :

-Highland Park 18 (I have the 12 and love it) -Glenfarclas 25 (I have the 15 and love it) -Springbank 18 (I have the 12 CS and love it)

Or if you could propose something in the same range, I would greatly appreciate it.

@chickenium, flip a coin (a three-sided one), i don't think you'd regret any one of those......

Hmm. I am off to that Canadian whisky Mecca known as Alberta. I have a spreadsheet of several options but really, I have no clue what I'll pick up. Likely my last purchase for a couple of o this, so it should be a good one.

My buddy is taking me to a liquor store straight off the plane...lol. If there are any Calgarians, I'd love to hear your thoughts on the stores, selection, and special drams I might consider.

@yalc I have one dram left in a Batch 38 bottle. I was completely undone when I first tasted it. It has spoiled me from everything new I've tried since.

@SquidgyAsh Oh you're lucky. I haven't heard anything on my order, I should have a look at the tracking site. Again, a terrible problem to have, deciding which awesome whisky to have next! RE: Port Ellen - isn't that for you birthday (not that I know when that is)?

SquidgyAsh replied

@systemdown It is!! I've been informed that I can't even look at the bottle until my birthday! Which is the end of June. Sadly. Hahaha. I was pleasantly surprised when my bottle came through Customs without a hitch!

@SquidgyAsh Ah right, that's good! It'll be a nice surprise then. At least you'll be opening yours 6 months before me! I guess that's the downside of forward planning and "buy now to drink later". Glad you didn't get slugged at customs. Touch wood it'll be the same for me.

A small silver lining for the trip to the Chicago area this past week, for my grandma's funeral, was a chance to travel to Binny's (Skokie & Niles stores, just north of Chicago) to pick up several bottles that are not available in Ontario or Michigan.

Yamazaki 18 was acquired as I wanted to get a Japanese whisky to honour my grandma's work, through the National Council of Churches, in keeping a pair of Japanese-American children out of the internment camps of the US West during World War II...she held the rather unpopular belief (at that time, especially) that children should not suffer for the decisions of politicians.

I also picked up Rowan's Creek bourbon and was lucky to get the only bottle at the Niles, or Skokie, stores of the Parker's Heritage Collection 5th edition. I had been told by Binny's Skokie, that the Binny's allocation of the PHC 5th had just been recently approved, so the one bottle showing on the computer for the Niles location was likely just for setting up the inventory tracking. I had to go to Niles anyway for the Yamazaki 18, so I figured I would keep my eyes peeled for the PHC at the same time...it really was the only bottle on the shelf. Can't wait to do a side-by-side of the PHC 4th and 5th editions!!

I also, since my wife had to travel separately from my mom and I due to work commitments, was able to pick up a bottle for 'WhiskyJoe' (normally three bottles can be brought back between two people, but since three of us were traveling, a 4th bottle could be brought back on a duty free basis). He is a fan of smoky and peaty offerings, so the Ardbeg Corryvreckan was picked up for his cabinet (we will be opening all four bottles for sampling together at some point...hopefully soon)...for almost 1/2 price what it would cost in Ontario (it also seems to be more difficult to acquire than the Uigeadail, the other option).

Other "Illinois-only" bottles that did not make the cut this time (I will be going back at some point in the future to visit Chicago itself on a more in-depth basis) included another bottle of Koval Lion's Pride (either the 47th Precinct, or the Dark Oat bottling), and one of the Kilchoman offerings.

One from the Scotch Malt Whisky Society's newcomers' sample pack: 5.31, Morning has Broken (Auchentoshan 11 year old). I've seen where a taster had posted that it was the taster's favorite Auchentoshan, so I'm looking forward to cracking the bottle open. Alas, this won't be for a few days. Patience ....

@RoganFox. A few bottles of Sonalta PX suddenly appeared in Vancouver recently. I snapped up 2. Just cracked one last week and it is very, very good. Enjoy. I'm going to open my Jura Prophecy next, and I'm thinking I will go looking for some Springbank 15 when I am down in Oregon this weekend.

When my friend Tim left our bourbon get together in Bardstown a year ago April I told him to take the remainder of my Old Rip Van Winkle 15/107 bottle with him which he enjoyed according to an email he sent me later. Tonight, I'm going to dip into my dwindling supply of those bottles and open one.

The first pour I drink will be to celebrate my birthday today

My second pour will be to remember my friend Tim who died in a accident on this day last year. He more than anyone else taught me that whiskey (spelling it this way since he was a bourbon drinker) was best enjoyed when shared with friends. RIP Tim

@TomH, right on! Happy Birthday! My best to the spirit of Tim, and some Stitzel-Weller Pappy Van Winkle 15 is a most excellent way to celebrate your birthday. I will keep you both in mind and have some Pappy 15 myself later in the evening in a toast to the two of you, after my Tuesday night basketball game.

@Victor. Many thanks for your help and advice prior to my first serious foray into American whiskey. If it weren't for the ridiculous Canadian customs restrictions on bringing in alcohol, I would be seriously loading up when we are down in Oregon next weekend. Nonetheless, I will bring back what I can and have the inlaws bring some more next time they come up here. As I said in my PM, Victor, your knowledge is truly encyclopedic. Cheers.

We will be opening Cask No. 17.32 "Boiled Sweets and Grapefruit Peel" It is brand new on our June Outturn! "Bubble-gum and vanilla sponge, with boiled sweets (pear drops and lemon sherberts); apple & elderflower cordial, white wine jelly; after a while a light soapiness. Fresh and Clean overall. The taste is sweet, sharp and hot- grapefruit and lemon peel; powdery, with a pinch of salt. The scent of grapefruit skins increase at reduced strength, and the other aromas remain intact."

Recently popped the cork on my bottle of Laphroaig QC...it was a difficult decision as I had a choice between Bowmore 12, the Laphroaig, a Signatory Vintages Caol Ila, and a couple of other Islay. Suffice to say I was not disappointed!
