Another cask sample from an Edradour that is not yet released. It was distilled in 1989 and is currently maturing on an oloroso sherry cask. It was one of the better Edradour I tasted at the masterclass that Andrew Symington led at a festival in Belgium.

Sound and succulent nose, that is surprisingly fresh. Gooseberries, raspberries, stewed rhubarb. Very fruit. I quite like it. Something that reminds me of Cuberdons (Google is your friend). The spices play second fiddle. Burnt caramel, hint of espresso. Something floral as well. Lavender? All the aromas are quite nicely interwoven. I simply love this nose. But adding water mercilessly bereaves it of its fruitiness and makes it herbal and floral to the extreme. Handle with care.

On the palate, this continues nicely, although the whisky seems to seek out the difficult balance between sweet and mildly sour. Some carton plays party pooper. That improves a bit with water, making the sour note evolve towards gooseberry and citrus.

Long, spicy finish, that brings green and purple to the mind’s eye.

This is a difficult Edradour for me. Took me quite a while to work it out. Case of doubt. I will give Andrew the benefit of the doubt and give this one a thumbs up. Live with it.
