Highland Park 1998

I am working feverishly on my summer vacation plans, so what better to sip than a vacation dram? That is why I am putting three Highland Park vintages for Travel Retail (although they can be obtained elsewhere as well) next to each other: the 1998, 1994 and 1990, all of them bottled in 2010. Let me start with the youngest, sporting a yellow label.

The nose is slightly mineraly (flints) and shows quite a bit of grain and caramel. Nice smokiness with that typical Orkney peat, with loads of heater. Honey makes it round, while mint keeps it fresh. The caramel evolves into toffee. Leave it long enough and you will even get some chocolat milk. Inviting.

On the palate, it is immediately obvious that this was mostly from sherry casks. Spicy on liquorice and cloves. Caramelized apple, hazelnuts, sweet malt and hints of coffee. Midpalate it turns slightly bitter.

The medium long finish continues mostly on salty liquorice and is pretty drying.

Lovely and friendly prices Highland Park. Around 40 EUR.

This is a Highland Park vintage. Distilled in 1998 an bottled from "selected casks" in 2010 making it 12 years old.

  • Nose: Quite briny and road tar really dominate, some sweetness, heather honey and floral notes underneath along with some spice. With Water a kind of vanilla custard is there along with the neat elements

  • Pallet: Beautiful honey note, maritime noes are more restrained, spices there too. With Water huge floral involvement and herbal notes bit of bite and dryness

  • Finish: floral notes comes through more, spices also linger around no Highland Park smoke however. With Water much the same

  • Mark – neat 7.9, with water 7.9

This whisky isn't bad at all, but it certinally is not as good as their standard 12 year old which is a beautiful dram. It lacks HP character where is the gentle peat and wafting smoke? It is interesting but i'm not thinking another dram is in order

ose: Sweet notes, evident peat, more sherried than the 12 year old, spices.

Palate: Peat, then a sweet n’ sour mix, which is quite interesting. Vanilla, vs some woody sourness. Interesting combination.

Finish: A little ‘bitter sweet’ symphony going on.

I wonder why they do the different nomenclature for Duty Free. Is this no different than regular 12 year old since bottled in 1998 and sold in 2010? I like the reference to the Verve song.

@jeffc : this is very different than the 12 year old. a different vatting. this is why. IMHO those DF only releases are nice, but not excellent. better go for the Hjarta or the 18 / saint magnus...
