Nose: this is Jack Daniel's I can believe in. This is a very sweet, very caramel-y, very high-pitched extremely intense nose. Lots of vanilla. A little hickory wood. This is like molten caramel poured over cotton candy. It is beautiful and clean. Water added lowers the pitches more to the medium range and the nose remains very intense. Score: 24.5/25
Taste: a little lower in the pitch in the mouth, with stronger hickory and sugar-maple (Lincoln County Process)flavours. Very nice in the mouth, though not equal to the fabulous nose. Water added brings out deeper muddied tones of hickory, etc. in that very Jack Daniel's sort of way. Score: 22/25
Finish: long, stays strong and consistent. The water-added finish continues the flavours of the water-added palate. Score: 21.5/25
Balance: there is no disappointment here for me with this high proof Jack Daniel's. This is an intense whiskey with plenty of complexity. A score of 90 from me for this whiskey is a critic's score. For personal enjoyment as an intensity buff this is more like a 94 point whiskey for me. Score: 22/25
Total Sequential Score: 90 points
Strength: very strong flavours throughout. Score: 24/25
Quality: consistently high quality flavours. Score: 23/25
Variety: very good variety throughout the tasting stages. Score: 22/25
Harmony: very adequate harmony of the flavours throughout. Score: 21.5/25
Total Non-Sequential Score: 90.5 points
Comment: I try to be fair to all of the whiskeys which I taste. I've had Jack Daniel's Old No. 7 which has been all over the place, from very good to horrible. I've never liked Gentleman Jack. I've liked maybe a quarter of the Jack Daniel's standard Single Barrels I've tried. The others have seemed rough around the edges to me. But here, with this bottle of Jack Daniel's Single Barrel Barrel Proof the intensity is fabulous and the barrel selection is excellent. I wholeheartedly recommend Jack Daniel's Single Barrel Barrel Proof, this barrel of it anyway. Tom Alexander, this one is definitely for you.
Find where to buy Jack Daniel's whisky
I'll support you on the rule that 25% of the JDSB barrels are good/great. I've tasted from 2 and one was just OK and the other was much less than so. Given the price of the product, I think JD would do well to make barrel selection a priority and perhaps decide upon a consistent flavor profile for this product.
As it stands, I will not buy a bottle of this given that the odds of receiving a 90 point bottle are 1 in 4. Until then i'll stick with Dickel for a more consistent and flavorful Tennessee Whiskey. Luckily I have 2 bottles of 9yr barrel proof single barrel. Both are outstanding and from different barrels.
