Nikka Black Special is a Coffey grain whiskey and it has been in the market since 1965. For me it was an everyday easily drinkable dram. That's why I decided to call it a Rush Hour whiskey. And just like the movie trilogy, this one is suitable for everyone (and I know, Jackie Chan is not Japanese). The movie reference is there just because I could imagine grabbing a bottle of this with me when running on a bus heading to some rock festival or a party at my friends house.

This is a takeaway whiskey and it is to be enjoyed while in a hurry (like when battling with mobsters in Hong Kong). Sure, you can drink this at home while relaxing but for that purpose, there's lots of other contenders as well.

Nose: Sweet and nutty with a little bit of refreshing vanilla

Taste: Sweetness turn into spices and salt with also some bitterness. Dark Chocolate.

Finish: Creamy and malty, quite long (but not long enough).

Balance: This is lively, offering a nice mix of sweet and spicy notes but it doesn't give you any eureka moments like the best ones do.

Nikka Black... possibly one of my most detested whiskies! I had more than a few sloppy nights with the NB before I started to appreciate quality over quantity...

Was nice to finally see a review of it though! Question, is Suntory Red available where you are? If it is... NEVER buy it... ; )

:D I know it's not the best possible choice but it went well last Friday with few other blends. I guess for me, anything goes...I've had my share of 10€ blends at the coast of Spain and in the breezing Finland...

In Finland, the selection of Japanese whiskies is very small. We only have Hibiki 12 and Hakushu 12 at our monopoly position holding liquour store called Alko. From our tax free ferries going to Sweden and Estonia there might be few more like Nikka From the Barrel...
