Balsa Wood

The Nikka Super Rare Old is a popular blend that first appeared in 1962, then disappeared into oblivion, only to be revived now. It is mostly single malts from the Nikka concern, meaning Yoichi and Miyagikyo, upholstered with the coffey still produced grain from Nikka. The nose is honeysweet on caramel and forrst berries, but rather light. I get some banana, cigar box and balsa wood, but not much else. And yet, this smells pleasant and inviting. The body is rather light, but not watery. It is clear that some sherry wood was used in the mix, as I get all kinds of citrusy and other light fruit notes, mildly sweet and sour reminding me a bit of agrum. A little spicy. But light is the key word here. What a short finish, indeed. I understand the Japanese do like a light whisky, which probably does very well in a highball or as an aperitif. Neat it is okay, but far from exceptional.
