Contemplating buying a Basil Hayden 8 year (Part of Jim Beams Small Batch Collection) or trying a Jack Daniels Single Barrel or both in an effort to retaste American whiskey.

@GotOak91 , If you like rye whiskey you will like the Basil Hayden or if you like smooth sweet whiskey trying the Jack Daniels Single Barrel.

These to whiskeys are quite a bit different. Basil Hayden is spicy, woody with a dry finish. Jack Daniels Single Barrel is sweet and smooth, it's Tennessee whiskey.

I actually like them both.

@Benancio Youre very right they are quite different. I haven't had much experience with rye whiskey or rye heavy bourbon. So I guess that sums up that choice but then again a nice first time rye exposure isn't a bad thing either.

@GotOak91 , Be careful going down that spicy rye rabbit hole, it's like going down the smokey Islay rabbit hole. Don't get lost and watch out for the Mad Hatter.

Picked up bottles of Highland Park 12, 15, 18, and 21 for our vertical tasting in November (group purchases, I may not end up owning any of them...), and a bottle of Clynelish 14 for myself for later.

The holiday gift sets are beginning to show up in retail outlets already. My wife picked up a 12 Dewars gift set with two tumbers. Two very Don Draper looking glasses, and a bottle of 12 year old blended Scotch for the bar, for less than $30US. She got it for holiday guests that prefer a blend, or want Scotch as a mixer.

@YakLord: Let us know how you find the Clynelish - I finished a 200ml. recently (from last Christmas) which was a splendid 'drop' right up to the finish, which didn't; it was like falling off a cliff - Just as I got to thinking that's really deliciously malty and sweet, it was gone. No finish! It was like that from the day it was opened, which is why it got pushed to the back of the cabinet, I guess.

Slainte!

It's been a decadent week, just opened two bottles from the bunker for two separate special occasions. Bruichladdich 1970 (you know, THE Bruichladdich 1970) Glendronach 1972 cask #711 KWM exclusive The Bruichladdich is ethereal and the pinnacle of everything that pure laddie spirit is capable of being. The Glendronach is unbelievably concentrated on the nose, like no other whisky I've ever had, but the palate is surprisingly sharp and requires a fair bit of water to tame it.

A bottle of Bunnahabhain Toiteach I reserved at a preview tasting finally arrived. I've read a few reviews on the previous "green bottle" of Toiteach that got average to below average reviews, but the peat fans at our tasting were very impressed with this new "brown bottle" Toiteach. It's the first heavily peated Bunnahabhain bottled by the distiller, that's been made available to the US market. If you get a chance, try it.

Cracking open two new bottles later tonight: Glenmorangie Astar, and (to see what all the fuss is about) Thomas H. Handy Sazerac Rye. I don't know yet if it's the best combination for a tasting evening, but I like to live dangerously.

Going to N.C. to see friends planning on acquiring Troy and Sons White Whiskey while Im down there. I've heard its unique in the way of they use a 100% American non GE heirloom corn called Crooked Creek Corn that's apparently only grown near the distillery. If not maybe something else I can't find easily where I live

Prepping for our Highland Park vertical tasting tonight - 12, 15, 18, 21. We wanted to get a bottle of Thor, but the LCBO was all out, so we might also open my bottle of Scapa 16 as a contrast/comparison of the two Orkney styles.

A week ago, at a tasting of rare Scotches way beyond my price range, I settled for something more affordable, a set of Compass Box 50ml samples in a black wooden display case. The set included Asyla, Oak Cross, Spice Tree, The Peat Monster, and Hedonism.

After watching Rafly's vlog on Solera bottlings, I picked up a bottle of Glenfiddich 15 year old Solera, last night!

@WhiskyJoe found himself in Alberta recently and kindly picked up a bottle of Laphroaig QC @ $40...this beats the $70 cost here in Ontario by a wide margin. This has been a long-standing wishlist item that I could never seem to pull the trigger on due to it not being a 'cheap' (less than $50) bottle, and not being a 'discontinued' bottle by the LCBO (my method for prioritizing my purchases most of the time). I know that I love this one as I have had it several times at a local pub.

My wife came across a 'Bartending for Dummies' book at a friends house recently. In an effort to make a dent in an unopened bottle of Bailey's, I made an 'Irish Cowboy' a simple, equal parts drink of Bailey's and bourbon over ice.

For the bourbon component, I cracked open my bottle of Buffalo Trace as it turns out that it is my only easily available 'standard' (i.e. non-wheat or rye heavy, non-100% single grain, non-cask strength) bourbon in my cabinet. It turned out great, and I can't wait to sip some Buffalo Trace neat at some point in the near future!

My local (Middle Pk.) Dan Murphy has done the usual Christmas gala displays and this year there are more Malt Whiskies than ever: One that caught my eye was a Laphroaig 18yo. from the independent bottler Hart Brothers for Au.$91.00; earlier this year, it was about $140.00, IIRC.

A couple of reviews I've read give this particular 'drop' more points than the OB. & it's bottled at a sensible 46% ABV. Of course, I can't wait to open it!
