Wow, I got one of the 500 bottles worldwide and I didnt even try hard. I saw it on a website, did a quick search and ordered it rightaway. I made a mistake before by not ordering a George T Stagg when I could so this one was to ease the pain a little.

Nose: Nice woody, spicy tones wit Indonesian spekkoek. Cinnamon, cloves, anise, ginger, butter. Its quite big and expressive without water but adding some wont hurt it at all. a Little peat comes through, but its more like an overbaked bread. Its peaty allright, but it doesnt smell like anything Scottish. Like a BBQ in a dirty overcrowded Indian city.

Palate: Its there right away, no feeling out process, its right in your face. Brown sugar like in well-aged dark rum, lots of unknown spices, fresh bananabread and here comes the hot, gingery peat. Its easily drinkable at a whopping 57%, but with water it really opens up a lot. It becomes a different monster, more accessible and even smooth with big banging flavors.

Finish: Strange tarry smoke, burnt wood, lots of spices and that feeling on the side of the lips. It lasts more than 5 minutes:)

The peat and smoke are not dominant at all, but serve as a slave to the masterful spicy and oaky notes. Its not too complex, but hey its quite young, so it does what it does best. Being really tasty and huge and completely something else.

I am extremely fortunate to call Mr Ashok Chokalingam, Global Brand Ambassador of Amrut Distilleries, a very good friend. However, he's a better friend to me than I am to him I must admit. For he released an exclusive batch of The Amrut 100 and had it bottled exclusively for our Malt Society in Dubai. Literally, just for us. And for that I am eternally grateful to him.

Bottled in September 2012, The Amrut 100 is first matured in ex-bourbon casks before making it's way into 100 liter virgin oak barrels, thus, accelerates the maturation process and leaving behind intense flavors.

The nose is mostly peat with a distinct earthy, mossy feel to it accompanied by mild weetabix soaked in warm milk. Oddly comforting. The sweetness takes a while to develop and comes in the form of orange vanilla. Adding a dash of water softens the peat and allows soft Danish butter cookies to come through. Very nice.

The palate comes firing at you on all cylinders and the peat and the high ABV don't leave much room to maneuver the taste buds. It's a bit of a lashing to be honest. But nothing that my weathered palate cannot sustain. The dash of water does make it more approachable and makes the toffee sweeter. Contrary to my rather rigid belief system I think I like this with a few drops of H2O.

The finish is long with a balance of spices.

All in all this is an extremely enjoyable dram. It is not as complex as the expressions that Amrut is known for but it certainly holds it's own against other peated whiskies in it's weight class.

@MCM actually no. There are single malt whiskies freely available from licensed stores boasting a very good variety. But the best is the Dubai Duty Free - they have one of the largest collection of whiskies any where. Plus there are whisky bars cropping up every day.

So quite a good place to be if you have a Malt Society!
